Midfielder Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam is the lone woman hockey player from Manipur who has made the cut to the final squad of the Indian women’s hockey team for Tokyo Olympics. Sushila is among the 13 women hockey players from Indian Railways selected for the national team for participation at the prestigious Olympic Games. Hockey India on Thursday announced the final list of the 16-member women’s squad for Tokyo Olympics scheduled to be held in July-August this year. As per the Hockey India report, the 16-member team comprises eight players who represented India at the Rio Olympics and eight other Olympic debutantes. This will be the third appearance of the Indian women’s hockey squad at the Olympic Games, with previous appearances in 1980 and 2016, it said.The other players include goalkeeper Savita Punia, defenders Deep Grace Ekka, Nikki Pradhan, Gurjit Kaur, UDITA, midfielders Nisha, Neha Goyal, Monika Malik, Navjot Kaur, Salima Tete, forwards Rani Rampal, Navneet Kaur, Lalremsiami, Vandana Katariya and Sharmila Devi. Congratulating the selected squad, Hockey India president Gyanendro Ningombam said: “Over the past few years, leading up to this edition of the Olympics, the women’s team has worked very hard to achieve their current form. I am confident that this team will give a tough competition to any opponent.” “I wish them all the very best for their preparation and performance at the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games,” he added. Meanwhile, Manipur Hockey expressed happiness over the selection of Sushila Chanu in the national women’s squad, said its general secretary Seram Neken.
